San Giorgio Maggiore, an island in the Venetian Lagoon, is best known for its church. At the center of this painting, the building’s tower, dome, and white marble façade are bathed in bright afternoon sunlight. Guardi’s work, distinguished by lively, expressive brushstrokes, was widely collected. Images like this, highlighting the city’s most distinctive sights, were bought by wealthy eighteenth-century visitors to remind them of their time in Venice.
