Winslow Homer, Sleigh Ride
Winslow Homer
American, 1836–1910
Sleigh Ride
c. 1890–95
Tracks in the snow, painted with subtle touches of blue and pink, lead our eyes to a sleigh about to disappear over the ridge of a hill. The occupants of the sleigh—one outlined in yellow moonlight, the other wearing a red scarf—seem almost incidental in the quiet grandeur of the landscape. This small, unsigned canvas remained in Homer’s studio until his death and was perhaps never intended to be exhibited in public.
