Soup Tureen and Stand
1779–81
This splendid soup tureen is lavishly decorated, from the still life of assorted vegetables on the cover to the coiled sea creatures that form its feet and handles. With its elegant tray, it was part of a 400-piece dinner service, made for the Duke and Duchess of Sachsen-Teschen. Older sister of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, the duchess amassed an extensive collection of silver and other treasures.
