Standing Bishop Saint
1445–68
This figure is identified as a bishop by the crozier he holds and by the pointed miter he wears on his head. His halo indicates that he is a saint, but his identity remains unknown. The artist paid careful attention to decorative surface details, including the gilded borders of his robe and the crozier's ornate top, which is punched into the gold background rather than painted. The panel’s narrow shape and the evidence of what was once a curved, attached frame indicate that it was originally part of a larger work.
