Teakettle, Stand, and Lamp
1745–47
Paul de Lamerie, one of London’s leading silversmiths in the early to mid-1700s, drew on two major sources of insipration to decorate this tea set: the swirling flora and fauna of the Rococo period and a fascination with the Far East. The body of the kettle shows an imagined scene of a Chinese tea ceremony. The attached stand and lamp ensured a continuous supply of hot water to accommodate refills during afternoon tea, a traditional British social ritual.
