Honoré Daumier

French, 1808–1879

The Print Collectors

c. 1860–63

Famous for his prints caricaturing modern French life and contemporary politics, Daumier was also an innovative painter and sculptor. This small panel captures the enthusiasm of a group of connoisseurs huddled together to examine a print that one of them holds up to the light. Their faces suggest differing reactions, some appreciative, others reserving judgment. Prints and portfolios are strewn across the table and framed pictures line the walls.
