The Virgin and Child with Saint Dominic, Saint Catherine, and Donor
c. 1350–1375
The Virgin Mary holds the infant Jesus on her lap. Her sacred status is symbolized by the cloth of honor behind her. Two saints stand by her throne, while angels crown her the Queen of Heaven. Kneeling at Saint Catherine's feet is the donor who commissioned the painting, his small scale indicating his human nature. The gilded and tooled background heightens the celestial, otherworldly quality of the image.
