View off Margate, Evening

Joseph Mallord William Turner

English, 1775–1851

View off Margate, Evening

c. 1840

Vigorous brushwork and loosely defined forms are characteristic of Turner’s late work. In this enigmatic painting, a woman and two children, shrouded in mist and sea spray, seem to be gazing at a passing sailboat or at the ghostly hulk of a distant ship. Turner’s companion, Sophia Booth, originally owned the painting and it is probably a view of Margate, the coastal town near London where she lived.
