Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta
Spanish, 1841–1920
Woman in White
c. 1880
Madrazo posed this young woman, in a diaphanous white costume and elaborate hat, with her head turned sharply to her right. Her profile is outlined against a plain blue background and her pale skin is tinted with delicate touches of pink. Like many of Madrazo's portraits, this painting emphasizes the model's beauty and the artist's remarkable technique, rather than the sitter's identity.
