Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
French, 1796–1875
Young Woman in a Pink Skirt
c. 1845–50
The identity of the figure in this painting is unknown. Her facial expression is difficult to read, but her heavily-lidded eyes and sloping shoulders suggest weariness with the world. Like several other pictures Corot painted around the time, this one may have been intended as an image of meditation or melancholy rather than a portrait of a particular person.
