Breakfast Set
c. 1728–29
Breakfast sets were often part of a noblewoman’s levee, a social ritual during which society ladies would receive visitors as they ate and dressed. This set consists of chocolate beakers, a tea service, and other vessels for serving and drinking liquids, as well as cutlery, an egg cup, a spice box, and bowls for bouillon. Each of these items has its own storage space in the intricately designed, velvet-lined case. The set shows little sign of use; it was probably intended for display to demonstrate the owner’s good taste and wealth.
