Meissen Porcelain Manufactory
German, 1710–present
Possibly Clio or Calliope
c. 1745–55
This figure may represent one of the nine Muses, goddesses of the arts in Greek mythology—Clio and Calliope, the muses of history and epic poetry respectively, were often shown with stylus and scroll in hand. This small sculpture may be the only remaining example of its kind. Similar porcelain sculptures, grouped in pairs or in larger sets, embellished dessert tables in the eighteenth century.
