Reticule
early 19th century
This leather and silk reticule (a small handbag with a drawstring closure) bears a striking resemblance to the one that Harriet Campbell is holding in the nearby portrait of her by Ammi Phillips. Harriet may have used her reticule to carry coins, keys, notes, or other small objects.
