Auguste Toulmouche
French, 1829–1890
Woman and Roses
1879
A young woman in a spotless white dress has paused, while strolling through a well-tended garden, to enjoy the fragrance of a cluster of pink roses. Creeping vegetation clings to the wall behind her, and a glimpse of less cultivated scenery can be seen beyond the wooden trellis on the right. The painting draws a parallel between the youthful freshness of this fashionably-dressed woman and the flowers in bloom around her.
