Gustave Le Gray
Brig on the Water
1856 (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute)
Recognizing the ways in which the invention and development of photography informed every aspect of later nineteenth-century art, the Clark in 1998 embarked upon a major initiative to build a core collection of early photographs. Featuring works by Gustave Le Gray, Edouard Baldus, Charles Nègre, Eugène Atget, Francis Frith, Carleton Watkins, and Julia Margaret Cameron, this exhibition provides a sampling of some of the early fruits of this initiative.
