Ellen Handler Spitz is currently Honors College professor of visual arts at the University of Maryland (UMBC), where she teaches interdisciplinary courses that involve philosophy, psychology, literature, and the performing arts, as well as visual culture. She is author of Art and Psyche (New Haven, 1985), Image and Insight (New York, 1991), Museums of the Mind (New Haven and London, 1994), and Inside Picture Books (New Haven and London, 1999). While at the Clark she will pursue her investigations into the ways in which children have been initiated into the realms of the arts and culture, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
