Gao Shiming is Executive Dean of the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art. His subject is visual culture research, contemporary art studies, and curatorial study. He has organized many large exhibitions of academic standing, includingThe Migration of Asian Contemporary Art and Geo-politics (2002 - 2004), Farewell to Post-Colonialism: the Third Guangzhou Triennial (2008), and Rehearsal: the 8th Shanghai Biennale (2010), among others. He has published several books, includingVisual Thinking: Intangible Dialogue between Art and Phenomenology (2002),A Visual Report: Migration of Contemporary Art and Geo-politics in Asia (2003), Farewell to Post-colonialism (2008), Mask and Mirror: Visual Studies on the Real and Reality (2010), and Book in Action: on Curatorial Writing (2011). His research project at the Clark is titled Rehearsal, or, Art without Artwork, which seeks to examine the complex relationships between acting and action, participation and performativity, labor and work, authorship and ownership, and creation and innovation.
