Philip Conisbee is senior curator of European paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. D.C. Widely published, he has been a contributing organizer of numerous exhibitions on aspects of French painting from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, including Cézanne in Provence (Washington, 2006), The Age of Watteau, Chardin, and Fragonard (Washington, 2003), Portraits by Ingres (New York and Washington, 2000), Corot and Early Open-Air Painting (Washington, 1996), and Georges de La Tour and His World (Washington, 1996). At the Clark, he will continue his research on Paul Cézanne’s paintings in the National Gallery for a catalogue of the collection and for a book devoted to Cézanne’s portrait Man in a Blue Smock, for the Kimbell Art Museum of Fort Worth.
