Susanne von Falkenhausen is professor in the department of art history at the Humboldt-University, Berlin. She writes and teaches on the history of western art since the French Revolution, with a focus on relationships between form and its contexts in modern political systems. She is author of writings on the Italian avant-garde and fascism, architectural history, nineteenth-century art in Italy and Germany, and of reflections on art history itself. Her books and articles include Der Zweite Futurismus und die Kunstpolitik des Faschismus in Italien (Frankfurt, 1979) and the exhibition catalogue Prints and Drawings by Adolph Menzel (Cambridge and Berlin, 1984). Her project at the Clark is a methodological and historiographical one: she will be exploring the special disciplinary skills of art history and examining art as a special case of visual and cultural practice in an age which proclaims the "globality" of the visual.
