Sybille Ebert-Schifferer is director of the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte) in Rome. Prior to this appointment, she was director of the Hessische Landesmuseum in Darmstadt and then the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen in Dresden. She is a scholar of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian art and is the author of many books, essays, and exhibition catalogues, including: Guido Reni und Europa: Ruhm und Nachruhm (Frankfurt, 1988); Giovanni Francesco Barbieri: Il Guercino 1591-1666 (Frankfurt, 1991); and Still Life: A History (New York, 1999).
