Painters have long been interested in finding ways to reproduce their work. Prints that copy a painting could be distributed easily and cheaply, thereby enhancing an artist’s reputation and leading to further lucrative commissions. Artists chose skillful and sympathetic printmakers to translate their work into another medium and were often closely involved in the process.
