Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence Opening Lecture

Debra Bricker Balken, guest curator of Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence, will explore how these significant American artists shaped each other's work and ideas about modern art within the avant-garde culture of early-twentieth-century New York in her opening lecture, "Dove, O'Keeffe, and the Critics." Balken—a former Clark Fellow and the 2005 Robert Sterling Clark Visiting Professor for the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art—has published widely on aspects of American modernism and contemporary art. She was the curator of Arthur Dove: A Retrospective, an exhibition that traveled nationally in 1997–98 with an accompanying publication by MIT Press.

In this Peabody Award winning documentary, legendary painter Georgia O'Keeffe candidly reveals her warmth, humor, and practical wisdom. For the first time on camera, O'Keeffe openly discusses her work and inspirations taken from the haunting mountain deserts of New Mexico.

Drop-in Watercolor Workshop

Taking inspiration from the exhibition Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence, work with local artist Sally Sussman to paint abstracts from nature at the Clark's beautiful lily pond. For all ages and abilities. All materials will be provided. Students will use watercolors from tubes and palettes and large postcard-sized paper that can be mailed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required. Heavy rain cancels this event. This program is supported by Berkshire Bank.
$5 per day per person

Enjoy a special, small-group gallery talk in the exhibition Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence beginning at 5:30 pm, after the museum closes to the public. Wine and cheese are offered prior to the talk from 5:00 to 5:30 pm.

"MinervaMation" Animation Camp

Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17, 9:30 am
to 3:30 pm
During this five-day workshop, eight- to twelve-year-olds under the direction of Kathy O'Mara, of Minerva Stage, will create an original short animated film inspired by the exhibition Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence. Students will also enjoy activities on the Clark's beautiful grounds. The original film created by the students will be screened in the auditorium during the Clark's Family Day on August 2. Enrollment for this camp is limited to 15 students.

An Artist in Her Own Right: Barbara Stanwyck and the Modern American Woman Film Series

Like Georgia O'Keeffe's, Barbara Stanwyck's career spanned most of the twentieth century, and according to film scholar David Thomson, reveals the most "credible portrait in cinema of a worldly, attractive, and independent woman in a man's world." This series will survey the best of Stanwyck's groundbreaking work from the same era as the works on view in Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence.

Free Family Day

Sunday, August 2, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
The exhibition Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence inspires a Family Day based on artistic interpretations of nature. Art activities include painting from sound, zoom-in drawings, and a group-sculpture project based on one of O'Keeffe's deer skull paintings. Enjoy Southwestern entertainment, food from local vendors, and workshops on how to make a cactus garden or create turquoise jewelry (fee charged for workshops). Admission to the galleries is free during this festive day.

Blindman's Bluff: Duchamp, Stieglitz, and the Fountain Scandal Revisited

Michael R. Taylor, Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will present a lecture exploring the profound impact Marcel Duchamp's "readymade" sculpture Fountain had on several members of the nascent American avant-garde in the early twentieth century.

Filming Georgia O'Keeffe: Conversation and Critique with Barbara Buhler Lynes

Join Barbara Buhler Lynes, Curator of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the Emily Fisher Landau Director of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center, as she reflects on the filmed representations of the iconic twentieth-century artist Georgia O'Keeffe with a screening of Georgia O'Keeffe: A Life in Art. Dr. Lynes will discuss O'Keeffe's active role in crafting her artistic identity through photography and film, commenting on the changing representation of the artist.

Amernet String Quartet

Returning to the Clark after a well-received 2008 appearance, the Amernet String Quartet will perform the premiere of String Quartet No. 10, composed by Stephen Dankner and inspired by Dove/O'Keeffe: Circles of Influence.
