Clark/Getty Symposium

Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25
The public is invited to this two-day international symposium organized in conjunction with the exhibition Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile. Speakers include Thomas Crow, director of the Getty Research Institute and Philippe Bordes, guest curator of the exhibition, and other prominent scholars. Tickets are $25 per day/$40 for the weekend ($15/$20 for members and students)

Sunday, June 5, 2:00 pm
"Jacques-Louis David, Court Artist to Napoleon"
Philippe Bordes, the guest curator and catalogue author of Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile will give the introductory lecture to the exhibition. A booksigning of the exhibition catalogue ($75 hardcover, $49.50 softcover) will follow.

Saturday, June 18, 2:00 pm
"Painting the Revolution: David Before Napoleon"
In this lecture, Michael Cassin, curator of education, will focus on David's career in the period before that covered by the exhibition.

Thursday, June 23, 6:00 pm
"The Anger of Achilles: How David Reinvented Tragic History Painting in Exile"
Thomas Crow, director of the Getty Research Institute, will give this public lecture.

Saturday, July 9, 2:00 pm
"David's Portraits: An International View"
Robert Rosenblum, noted arts writer and professor of fine arts at New York University, will place David's portraits of the French court and Napoleon's circle in context.

Saturday, August 6, 2:00 pm
"Napoleon, Image, and Trademark"
Mark Ledbury, associate director of the research and academic program, will discuss Napoleon as icon, from classic to kitsch.
