GALLERY TALK: JOSÉ GUADALUPE POSADA—SYMBOLS, SKELETONS, AND SATIRE

Get to know José Guadalupe Posada in this exhibition showcasing selections from the extensive collection of the artist’s work at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Whether playful or trenchant, vernacular or surreal, Posada’s imagery continues to share the vibrant visual culture of Mexico in the years before its 1910 Revolution.

Free with gallery admission. Pick up a ticket at the Manton Research Center Admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Capacity is limited to ten participants per talk. 


OPENING LECTURE: JOSÉ GUADALUPE POSADA—SYMBOLS, SKELETONS, AND SATIRE

Join Anne Leonard, exhibition curator, for the opening lecture of José Guadalupe Posada: Symbols, Skeletons, and Satire. In 1888, Posada was already recognized as “the foremost caricaturist and the foremost graphic artist” of his native Mexico. Leonard reviews Posada’s life and career and his continuing influence on Mexican culture. Whether playful or trenchant, vernacular or surreal, the artist’s imagery continues to delight.

SUMMER BOOK CLUB: THE UNDERDOGS BY MARIANO AZUELA
July 28, 7 pm 
Manton Research Center Reading Room 

The summer book club series continues with Mariano Azuela's The Underdogs, translated by Sergio Waisman. Mariano Azuela’s powerful novel about the Mexican Revolution (1910–20) provides a lens through which to view the popular prints of illustrator José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913). Posada lived to see the beginnings of a Revolution that transformed Mexican government and culture. 

Free, but capacity is limited to thirty attendees. Registration for this event opens on Tuesday, June 28. The final book club meeting takes place on Thursday, August 25.

 

CALAVERAS, CATRINAS, AND DANDIES: JOSÉ GUADALUPE POSADA AND THE PENNY PRESS IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY MEXICO

Dr. Diane Miliotes discusses graphic artist and illustrator José Guadalupe Posada and the historical context of his image production. Posada’s career spanned profound social and political changes in Mexico. Miliotes pays special attention to a number of key characters in Posada’s printmaking practice.

SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS TALK: CARICATURE IN CALLOT AND GOYA

Curatorial Assistant Sophie Kerwin presents a close look at the inventive etchings of French artist Jacques Callot (1592–1635) and Spanish artist Francisco de Goya (1746–1828). These artists’ novel use of caricature, whether political, social, or religious, is considered in tandem with the work of José Guadalupe Posada.
