ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Inspired by the Clark Art Institute's masterpiece Rockets and Blue Lights, this exhibition explores seascapes painted by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) during the final decades of his career. Approximately thirty-five oil paintings and watercolors, including many never before seen in the United States, represent Turner at the height of his artistic powers. Characterized by a free and loose brushwork and experimental color sense, these works brilliantly evoke Turner's modernism. Viewers will be swept away by the power and magnificence of these beautiful and exhilarating paintings, in which Turner painted the ocean as a stage for human drama and action.

The exhibition is organized by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and the Manchester City Galleries, Manchester, United Kingdom, and will also travel to the Burrell Collection, Glasgow.
