Jean-Marie Nogaret
French, active c. 1800
Bust of a Young Woman
1802
Little is known about the artist Jean-Marie Nogaret, whose inscription on the back of this bust reads: “Nogaret of Lyon made this in Paris year 1802.” The sitter is portrayed wearing the latest fashions of the day. Her distinctive hairstyle and her dress, with its low neckline and high waist, are characteristic of the Greco-Roman revival in France, which influenced both art and clothing after the Revolution in 1789.
