Antoine-Louis Barye
French, 1795–1875
Lion Devouring an Antelope
1806–75
Barye was famous for his sculptures of animal subjects. He sketched creatures in the Paris zoo and based his lifelike, often dramatic works on his close observations. Despite its small scale, this bronze gives a powerful sense of the violence of the natural world.
