Henry Raeburn
Scottish, 1756–1823
Colin Campbell of Park
c. 1822–23
A self-taught artist, Raeburn became a celebrated portraitist in his native Scotland, and often exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. The sitter, Colin Campbell, was captain of a Custom House cutter, who later established his own company that traded in the West Indies. Raeburn also painted a companion portrait of Campbell’s wife Anne. Both paintings exist in at least two versions, made, presumably, for different members of their family.
