Henry Raeburn
Scottish, 1756–1823
Miss Elizabeth Haig
c. 1798–1800
Elizabeth Haig probably sat for this portrait toward the end of the eighteenth century, when she was in her early forties. Although she had married David Greig of Kinross-shire, Scotland, in 1775, the portrait retains her maiden name. Little is known about the sitter, but her rich gown and cape of black velvet, lacy cap, and elaborate collar suggest a degree of wealth and refinement.
