Lippert & Haas Manufactory
Bohemian, 1832–1846
Painted by Johann Zacharias Quast, (Bohemian, 1814–1891)
Plate
1840
Decorated plates like this one were probably intended as collectors’ items or demonstration pieces, rather than for use in a dinner service. According to the inscription, the painter worked “from nature,” perhaps referring to insects collected and preserved by the porcelain manufactory. Painted in meticulous detail, each of the creatures casts its own shadow, further enhancing the illusion of reality.
