Soy Frame with Five Bottles
1840/41
Soy frames were designed to hold bottles filled with assorted sauces. Similar bottles have survived with their labels intact, listing condiments such as “Kyan, Ketchup, Soy, Lemon Pickle, Anchovy, Piquante, Cherokee, Quin, Taragan, Chili, Cavice, and Wood’s Fish Sauce." Elaborately decorated with scrolls, shells, and flowers, this frame also served as an elegant centerpiece.
