Master of the Embroidered Foliage

South Netherlandish, active c. 1495–1500

The Virgin and Child Enthroned

c. 1500

Mary is distinguished by the embroidered cloth behind her. At her feet is a fertile, walled garden symbolizing her virgin motherhood. She holds Jesus in her lap as he turns the pages of a devotional book. In the background, two figures, distracted by the world, seem unaware of the angels praying nearby. A number of works painted around 1500 in Bruges, characterized by delicate foliage, have been ascribed to this anonymous “master.” They may, however, have been painted by different artists, possibly trained in the same workshop.
