Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta
Spanish, 1841–1920
Woman with a Guitar
c. 1870
This panel shows a woman reading a musical score on the chair in front of her as she strums a guitar. Like many of his contemporaries, Madrazo often painted music-making, which was considered an important part of a woman’s education in the nineteenth century. Despite the painting’s small scale, the artist depicted the richly furnished interior and the figure’s elegant dress with great delicacy.
