Bodinier spent many years in Italy, frequently visiting Naples, where this scene appears to be set. Working from sketches made outdoors, the artist finished paintings like this in his studio in Rome, as the inscription indicates. Théodore Jubin may have been a relative visiting Bodinier during his stay abroad. He is shown resting on a rocky hillside, his walking stick and top hat beside him, perhaps having climbed from the sunlit bay below.
