For twenty years, the Clark has been actively acquiring European and American photographs from the 1840s through the 1910s. Featuring more than 950 works, this growing collection of early photography echoes the strengths of the Institute’s holdings in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, prints, and drawings. Works by French practitioners Eugène Atget, Édouard Baldus, and Nadar—whose architectural photographs are represented in A City Transformed—are particular strengths. In addition, the Clark’s collection includes important works by British photographers Julia Margaret Cameron, Francis Frith, William Henry Fox Talbot, and Linneaus Tripe, and American photographers Berenice Abbott, Alfred Stieglitz, and Carleton Watkins.
