Member Gallery Talk: A City Transformed

Kristie Couser, curator of A City Transformed: Photographs of Paris, 1850–1900, takes a close look at images of historic monuments, public buildings, and parks commissioned in the late nineteenth century. Couser discusses the role of the photographer in documenting the construction and renovation of the lavish Paris Opéra, grand-scale Musée du Louvre, picturesque Bois de Boulogne, and vast pavilions of bustling world’s fairs.

Curatorial assistant Regina Noto presents highlights of the exhibition, exploring period perceptions of Gothic architecture, the rise of the Gothic Revival, and the importance of photography to restoration efforts in late nineteenth-century Paris.
