"Creating and Collecting the Old West"

William H. Truettner, senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, discusses how the Old West became a familiar part of America's national identity through the creations of Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and other artists and writers, while at the same time western art emerged as an independent field for collecting and scholarship. Truettner has organized numerous groundbreaking exhibitions, including The West as America: Reinterpreting Images of the Frontier, 1820�1920, Picturing Old New England: Image and Memory, and Thomas Cole: Landscape into History.

"Cowboys and Indians: Remington's Characters"

Susannah Maurer, assistant curator at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, will discuss how Frederic Remington fashioned his vision of the West.

"Reading the West"
Wednesdays, March 5 and 19 and April 2 and 16, 7:00 pm
Assistant curator of American art Cody Hartley, curator of Remington Looking West, will lead a four-session reading group focusing on short stories of the American West. While Frederic Remington's images dominate pictorial ideas of the West, he was also a profuse writer (and a voracious reader). Gain new insight into the works and times of Frederic Remington by reading some of his finest short stories, as well as stories by Remington friends and peers like Owen Wister; in later sessions the group will read stories about the twentieth-century West, concluding with works from several contemporary writers.

Film Series: "A Wild and Savage Land: John Ford Looks at the American West"

Famed American director John Ford followed in the footsteps of Remington in crafting a distinctive vision of the American West. This winter's film series explores Ford's use of film to tell the story of the Wild West in the same way Remington used his canvas.

Fly by Night Mythology: Making Art out of American Mythologies

Contemporary photographer and scholar Larry McNeil, recently honored with a 2007 Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Fine Art, produces work about favored American myths, what happens at the intersection of cultures, and how different people perceive a shared history. Through a discussion of his art, McNeil offers further context for considering the legacy of Frederic Remington.

Members Remington Looking West Gallery Talk

Frederic Remington sought to ground his artwork in authenticity. He read voraciously and collected artifacts, photographs, and clippings that informed his studio practice. In this gallery talk, Cody Hartley, assistant curator of American art, will discuss his study of materials in Remington's archives and describe how the artist used sketchbooks and clipping albums as preparatory material for his artistic creations. "A Remington Repast" Members Event

Cody Hartley, assistant curator of American art, will lecture on the culinary indulgences typical for a man of Remington's class and documented in his diaries.
