checklist

All works in the checklist are in the Daniel Cowin Collection. The checklist is numbered following the order of the plates. In each section, artists are grouped alphabetically according to last name, and then chronologically by the date of the print’s execution. Titles inscribed by the artist are preferred. When an artist’s title is not inscribed on the print, we have deferred to exhibition titles used during the artist’s lifetime or to titles given in the catalogue raisonné.

DATES

Dates of works are documented unless preceded by a “circa” (c.). Works with inclusive dates preceded by a “circa” are thought to have been executed sometime within the date range. Works by Lill Tschudi from U.S. editions were printed in the year of the second edition using the original blocks and a similar color palette as the first edition.

MEDIA

Ink colors used in the printing process and the support are described. Each ink color refers to a separate block in the printing process. The color description conforms to commonly used colors today; for notes on the specific ink colors used in the printing process, see Stephen Coppel’s Linocuts of the Machine Age: Claude Flight and the Grosvenor School (1995). Paper color is listed according to the Print Council of America Paper Sample Book (1996).

DIMENSIONS

Measurements for works of art are given in centimeters, with height preceding width.

INSCRIPTIONS

Inscriptions have been transcribed when present and legible, and are given in italics. The media and locations of the inscriptions have been noted. The following annotations have been used for inscriptions:

l.c.: lower center

l.l.: lower left

l.r.: lower right

u.l.: upper left

u.r.: upper right

verso: back of support
