Eugène Boudin
French, 1824–1898
Bordeaux, the Quais
1874
Boudin regularly visited Bordeaux, a port city in southwestern France, which, like his native Normandy, provided opportunities to paint views of the sea and sky. In the foreground of this crowded harbor scene, groups of men gather on small, single-sail boats. The background is filled with larger ships, their masts silhouetted against a cloudy sky.
