Eugène Boudin
French, 1824–1898
Villefranche
c. 1892
Boudin wintered in Villefranche, a town in Southern France near Nice, in his later years. The bell tower of Saint Michel’s Church dominates this view of a bustling street in the town’s historic center. The blue Mediterranean sky complements the creamy yellows and oranges of the buildings, while the townspeople, painted with a few quick brushstrokes, enliven the shadows with occasional touches of color.
