The subject of this small painting is a street in Rouen, a city in Northern France known for its medieval center. Dogs, merchants, well-dressed ladies, and a nun bustle along amid the historic buildings lining the narrow, cobblestone street. Rather than providing a detailed, postcard-style view, Boudin has used small, lively brushstrokes to suggest the shapes and textures of the architecture and the busy activity of contemporary urban life.

James Reid Wilson, Montreal (d. 1914); probably Stevens Art Gallery, Montreal;¹ [Knoedler, New York, sold to Clark, 21 Apr. 1945]; Robert Sterling Clark (1945–55); Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, 1955. 1. A letter in the curatorial file from F.D. Chapman, Esq., Montreal, states that the works in Wilson’s collection were divided among the four heirs of his estate. A label on the back of the painting indicates that the picture was at one time with Stevens Art Gallery, owned by Frank Stevens and located on Drummond Street in Montreal. It is unclear whether Wilson purchased the painting from Stevens or it ended up at the gallery after Wilson’s death.
