Deauville, the Boat Basin
1887
Deauville was among the most fashionable resorts on the Normandy coast in the late nineteenth century. Instead of focusing on pleasure seekers on the beach, however, Boudin turned his attention to boats moored in the harbor. A cloudy sky dominates the composition, revealing the artist’s interest in conveying the cool light and notoriously changeable weather of this coastal region.
